Nestle Purina PetCare Company has issued a voluntary recall of its dog food. The company is recalling its Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental. The action was reportedly prompted by concerns that the product has high levels of vitamin D.
Nestle Purina expressed concerns the prescription dog food could result in health issues. This will depend on the exposure and amount of vitamin D.
Canines suffering from overexposure can show various symptoms, vomiting and loss of appetite. They could also experience increased thirst and urination. Vitamin D toxicity can also cause kidney dysfunction.
What are the Affected Products?
The company is recalling PPVD EL dry dog food in 8 LB and 20 LB bags. They have a UPC code of 38100 19190 (8 lbs) and 38100 19192 (20 lbs). This new recall is an expansion of an earlier one. It comes after an investigation uncovered a production error.
The dry dog food was reportedly distributed around the US. It was available by prescription in veterinary clinics and Purina Vet Direct. It was also offered through Purina for Professionals and other retailers.
