The recall also affects the 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan 335d models.
Understanding the Problem
BMW reported this latest recall pertains to older vehicle models with Takata airbags. News that the original steering wheels were being replaced prompted the company’s decision. The replacement steering wheels reportedly contain defective Takata airbag inflators.
BMW noted the inflator can explode during deployment. It could cause sharp metal fragments to strike the driver or other occupants. This can result in serious injuries or fatalities.
Defective Takata airbags were already linked to over 24 fatalities in the US. They are also the reason for the largest recalls in car manufacturing history. The company went bankrupt in 2017 after a massive scandal over its defective airbags. Their products are still causing problems today though.
Steps Consumers Can Take
BMW is advising vehicle owners to head to the nearest BMW dealership. Dealers will inspect the vehicle for a faulty airbag inflator. They will replace the airbag module if necessary. This service is free of charge.
The company is set to mail out owner notification letters by August 23, 2024.Drivers can also call BMW’s customer service at 1-800-525-7417. They can also contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Drivers can also visit www.nhtsa.gov to check if the recall affects their vehicle.
