The most powerful electric vehicle in General Motors’ lineup is now under a safety recall. The company is recalling the 2026 GMC Hummer EV pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. The recall affects vehicles produced between July 31, 2025, and October 24, 2025. GM says a defective wire harness could impair how its safety equipment functions.
What’s the Problem?
The front passenger airbag of the Hummer EV vehicles might not deploy as intended. The root cause is an improperly crimped wire in the suspect harness. It’s a critical flaw tied to the connection for the front passenger airbag.
There reportedly was a three-day period when the automated crimping machine was down. GM supplier Yazaki North America manually crimped these wiring harnesses during this time. Those manually crimped harnesses were later installed in the recalled Hummer EVs.
GM became aware of the problem on August 21, 2025. The alert came via a “Speak Up for Safety” report. A customer or stakeholder flagged a loose front passenger airbag connector wire. An investigation revealed that there was an issue with the airbag. It was also confirmed that this was due to a deviation from the approved process.
What is GM Doing to Fix the Issue?
GM is advising vehicle owners to head to their nearest dealership. GM dealers will replace the suspect harnesses. They will install a “jumper harness” that replaces the faulty component. Both the original and corrective harnesses serve the instrument panel circuitry. Each one has a connector for the passenger-front airbag. This ensures correct connection and reliable airbag deployment. The company will send out customer notification letters by December 22, 2025. Owners can also check if their vehicles are part of the recall by checking the VIN on GM’s website. The company has uploaded the affected VINs at the start of November.
