The Dorel Juvenile Group has issued a recall of 59,450 car seats due to defective seat anchors. The company explained that several models failed to conform to federal safety regulations.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also issued its own recall. The NHTSA made specific mention of the Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st car seats in their warning.
What to Watch Out For
The NHTSA explained that the lower anchors used to secure the child seat could fail. This could result in the seat detaching. The child using the seat won’t become restrained well. This increases the risk of injuries in case of accidents. So far, there are no reports of any injuries connected to the recall.
Dorel’s voluntary recall includes units of the Safety 1st onboard 35 Secure Tech. It’s also recalling the Safety 1st Secure Tech Infant Base. The following models are also affected by the recall:
- Maxi-Cosi Coral XP
- Maxi-Cosi Mico XP Max
- Maxi-Cosi Mico XP
- Maxi-Cosi Mico Luxe+
- Maxi-Cosi Infant Base
The car seats were reportedly manufactured between May 2020 and February 2023. The defective seats were then sold in Canada and the US. The items were also shipped for sale to other countries.
What Consumers Should Do
Dorel said consumers who bought the seats can keep using them. But the base must become installed using the vehicle belt. Owners can also install the carrier shell using the vehicle belt. The instructions are in line with what’s stated in the instruction booklet. This is only a temporary fix. Dorel will mail a replacement base to all car seat owners for free.
The company is set to mail notification letters to owners by April 7, 2023.
