Belkin has recalled its portable wireless smartwatch chargers due to fears of overheating. The company has also urged customers to stop using and dispose of the chargers.
Understanding the Problem
Belkin issued a recall of its BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger. The consumer electronics firm found a manufacturing defect with the portable power banks. The charger’s lithium cell component could overheat and become a fire hazard.
The wireless chargers have the model number BPD005. Consumers can identify the defective charges by checking the white text on the back. They can find the model name near the Apple Watch charging pad.
Scope of the Recall
Belkin’s recall affects around 4,000 portable power banks bought in the US, including 62 units reported sold in Canada.
The company received a report of a wireless charger catching fire and causing a house fire. There was property damage but no reported injuries.
What Consumers Should Do
Belkin is advising BoostCharge Pro Fast owners to stop using it. They must disconnect it from power sources and place the item safely. It should be far from flammable materials.
The California-based company is also offering full refunds to customers. Owners should visit the company’s website and complete the online recall form. They should submit the serial number found on the back of the charger. Customers can also provide a receipt or submit photos of the item if the serial number is illegible.
Consumers will receive detailed instructions on how to dispose of the chargers. They can also check the EPA website for places specializing in e-waste disposal.
