Chrysler recalled 340,000 diesel Ram pickup trucks. This was after six reports of vehicles catching fires. Of the six vehicle fires, the company said five occurred while the engines were still on.
Chrysler discovered that a part on some of its trucks may overheat. In rare instances, it may even pose a fire risk. At present, the company did not receive any reports of related injuries or accidents. The company said it will replace the electrical connector of these vehicles to fix the issue.
The said recall covers 340,000 of the following models:
- Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups
- 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis trucks from model years 2021-2023. (With 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines)
In the United State, there are over 306,000 of the above-mentioned vehicles. The rest of the almost 22,000 vehicles are in Canada and 13,000 are outside of North America.
This is not the first time Chrysler issued a recall. In November 2022, the company recalled 280,000 Ram Heavy Duty Trucks. These vehicles are also equipped with a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel. The recall was due to a risk of fire stemming from defective transmissions.
According to the company, a buildup of pressure and heat would result in a fluid leak. This will cause a fire to break out.
What To Do
Chrysler will begin notifying owners of the vehicles by letter in March. The company is urging the owners to check the NHTSA recall database. This way, they can check whether their vehicle is on the list of recalled trucks. All they need to do is to go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter their 17-character VIN.
The company also advises the owners to park their cars outside, away from buildings. Especially if these vehicles are not yet repaired. Make sure to wait for the replacement relay to come in.
