Nestlé Purina PetCare Company issued a nationwide recall of its dry dog food. This was after the company, received two confirmed cases of vitamin D toxicity in dogs. It happened after the dogs consumed the prescription diet.
The affected dog food is the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL). The recall was due to alleged elevated levels of vitamin D. This can result in health issues in dogs.
According to Purina, the two sick dogs recovered after the owners took the dog food off their diet. At present, the company did not receive any other cases of vitamin D toxicity linked to the PPVD EL.
The recalled products include 8-lb bags with a UPC code of 38100 19190. Another is the 20-lb bags with a UPC code of 38100 19192.

What To Do
Purina urged customers who own the above-mentioned products to discard them. Take note that the company distributed the affected dog food all over the United States. It is available via prescription at veterinary clinics. Purina Vet Diet and Purina for Professionals also offer the said dry dog food.
There are other retailers that offer the said dry dog food. These are those with the ability to confirm pet food prescriptions.
Purina assured the public that no other Purina products got affected by the recall. Dog owners might want to check for vitamin D toxicity symptoms. These include weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Other symptoms also include increased thirst and urination due to kidney dysfunction.
