Ford is recalling over 85,000 Explorer SUVs from model years 2020 to 2022. These vehicles are all equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility Package.
Understanding the Issue
The company is recalling the police-spec Explorers due to possible engine failure. All these SUVs have a 3.3-liter combustion. They also come with hybrid V6 powertrains.
Ford says the engines could fail at any time. This could cause the release of engine oil and fuel vapor into the engine compartment. These substances might amass near an ignition source, like an exhaust component. It could increase the risk of the engine compartment catching fire.
Smoke can also come out of the vehicle. Some components might melt as well.
What Can Consumers Do
Ford says drivers should park and shut off the engine once they notice unusual engine noises. They should do the same when they experience unexpected engine power loss. Smoke from the engine compartment is also a warning they should turn off the vehicle.
The vehicle manufacturer is asking police drivers to remain vigilant. They should remain s until dealers can update the Powertrain Control Module software.
Ford dealers will also inspect Explorers for connecting rod bearing failure. They will replace the engine long block if needed. Dealers will do all the inspections and repairs for free.
Ford is set to send out letters within the month. It will explain the safety risks. The company will send another notice once a final solution is available. The car manufacturer expects that to happen by the second quarter of 2025.
