General Motors has called for a voluntary recall of Silverado and Sierra trucks. The move covers Chevrolet and GMC trucks from the 2018 – 2019 model years.
The recall is over a possible defect in the vehicles’ roof-rail airbag inflators.
Breaking Down the Affected Models
GM’s newest recall impacts 1,658 vehicles. It affects specific units of the following:
- 2018 Silverado 1500
- 2018 Sierra 1500
- 2019 Silverado 2500
- 2019 Sierra 2500
- 2019 Silverado 3500
- 2019 Sierra 3500
Understanding the Issue
GM says the end caps of the inflators might detach during airbag deployment. This raises the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. GM also acknowledged the possibility that the inflators’ sidewalls might rupture.
The defective roof-rail airbag modules have the internal codes 84487867 and 84487868. The airbags were from Joyson Safety Systems.
Investigations on the problematic airbag inflators are ongoing. Both GM and Joyson acknowledged that they cannot pinpoint the root cause of the failure. GM has decided to recall all airbag modules from the affected production lot as a precaution.
GM initiated the recall after receiving a report involving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. The truck’s left roof-rail airbag inflator end cap detached without a deployment command. There were no injuries or crashes associated with that specific incident. But GM decided that a proactive replacement was the best and safest course of action.
What GM is Doing About the Issue
GM is advising vehicle owners to head to the nearest dealership. Dealers will replace the affected roof-rail airbag modules. The new modules will contain inflators from outside the suspect batch. The company is set to send out owner notification letters on August 11, 2025.
