General Motors has released a product recall for its Chevy Silverado 2500 and 3500 HD trucks. The vehicles in question are models from the years 2017 to 2019. The company is also recalling its GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500.
The recall is due to an issue with the models’ dual fuel tanks found on the diesel engine models. The Silverado 3500 truck with an HD Chassis Cab is the only model carrying the dual tank system.
GM expects around 17,436 Silverado HD models will become affected. The company has already received around 1,600 damage claims related to the issue. The number of Sierra units affected is reportedly around 4,696.
What’s the Issue?
The two vehicles feature a dual fuel tank that could fail and cause engines to stall. GM’s engineers found that the dual-tank system was prone to debris blockage. When the vent of the rear fuel tank becomes clogged, it will create a vacuum. This could cause the tank to collapse. This will stop the fuel tank from moving fuel to the front tank. This could result in engines stalling without warning. The sudden stop is a potential crash risk.
What Steps Should You Take?
GM advises the vehicle owners to go to their nearest dealership. They will inspect the truck’s fuel tank and the fuel pump module. They will also replace them if needed. The dealer will also install a vent hose to the rear tank system. The hose repositions the tank’s opening to a space that lowers the chance of clogging. This service is free of charge.
The company will send out notification letters by March 24, 2023.
