Medical Malpractice
Our client had abdominal surgery and several days after returning home, she had severe abdominal pain and abdominal distension, so she went back to the hospital where she had the surgery. She was diagnosed with a bowel obstruction, and her surgeon and his partner instituted conservative care and continued to watch her condition deteriorate. They did not consider exploratory surgery to determine the nature of the illness although this could have prevented further worsening of her condition. Unfortunately, while her surgeons were waiting, she was developing sepsis from undiagnosed and unrecognized bowel ischemia that would have been discovered in an exploratory procedure. Sadly, she died of septic shock when our experts testified that she would have lived if her surgeons had done surgery within the first few days of her readmission. Instead, they waited and waited, and she died. After years of litigation, the defendants finally took the case seriously and settled it for a large confidential amount before trial.
