Hyundai Motor America has announced a safety recall. This affects the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric SUVs. The affected units were built at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA).
The fasteners that keep the seatbelt retractor in place can be loose. This possible flaw could make the seatbelts useless in a crash. The issue raises the risk of injury.
Understanding the Issue
Hyundai reported that HMGMA employees installed the bolts securing the front seatbelt retractors. They did this during a previous rework process.
These fasteners might not be as tight as required. It could result in the seatbelt retractors failing to tighten and lock during a crash. This is a key safety feature designed to protect occupants.
Hyundai became aware of the concern after it received a field report in July. The report cited a malfunction involving a seatbelt retractor. This triggered a formal investigation. Hyundai found that mistakes were made during the rework process.
Technicians had disassembled the B-pillar area as part of the rework. They also removed the front seatbelt retractors. This created the possibility for incorrect reinstallation.
Hyundai inspected 19 vehicles that had undergone the rework process. They did this from September 2025 to November 2025. The company found that four vehicles have loose seatbelt retractor fasteners. The remaining units met proper installation standards
What Consumers Can Do
Hyundai is advising vehicle owners to go to their nearest dealership. Their technicians will look for loose fasteners. If found, the technician will retighten the bolts to the correct torque specification. This doesn’t cost anything.
The company will let owners know by first-class mail. They will mail the letters on January 16, 2026.
