The Indian Motorcycle Company has issued a voluntary recall of its motorcycles. An NHTSA report noted a problem in the crankshaft position sensor in the affected models. They were reportedly not routed as designed. This could cause the motorcycle’s engine to stall. The issue also increases the risk of a crash happening.
The Indian Motorcycle Company says the recall could affect an estimated 1,215 units.
What are the Affected Models?
The Indian Motorcycle Company is recalling the following:
- Chieftain
- Chieftain Elite
- Chieftain Dark Horse
- Chieftain Dark Horse Icons
- Chieftain Limited
- Roadmaster
- Roadmaster Elite
- Roadmaster Limited
- Roadmaster Dark Horse
- Springfield
- Springfield Dark Horse
All the recalled motorcycles are from the model years 2023 – 2024. Many noted that the Roadmaster Elite isn’t among the company’s current models. It also wasn’t included in the 2024 lineup announced in November. Experts say including the Roadmaster Elite in the recall is a sign it’s scheduled for release.
The company discovered the crankshaft issue back in October. A routine warranty review showed four claims of smoke coming from the sensor wire. The number of claims later rose to eight, with one reported engine stall.
What Can Consumers Do?
Motorcycle owners should head to the nearest dealership. The dealer will inspect the issue and reroute the sensor. They can also replace the crankshaft position sensor if needed. This is a free service.
