Kia America has issued a voluntary recall of its 2017-2022 model year Niros. It’s also recalling the Plug-in Hybrids from model years 2018-2022. The recall is over leaking fluid that could cause a fire in the engine compartment.
The company expects over 121,000 vehicles to become affected by the recall.
What is the Issue?
An NHTSA report stated that fluid could leak into the printed circuit board. The board is inside the hydraulic clutch actuator. A leak could cause an engine compartment fire. This increases the risk of injuries happening.
Kia has not received any reports of incidents about the issue.
The Niro recall is the latest issue involving a possible fire hazard. The Korean vehicle manufacturer issued a recall back in March. Kia and its parent company, Hyundai, called back more than 500,000 SUVs and minivans. This was over a fire risk as well.
Kia also recalled more than 5,000 Niro hybrid cars back in 2019. The recall happened in the UK for overheating of the vehicle’s electrical relay. There were no fears of fire or injuries at the time. But the units were reportedly recalled so they can become corrected fast.
What Can Consumers Do?
Kia America is asking vehicle owners to head to the nearest authorized dealership. Dealers will check the hydraulic clutch actuator. They will replace it if necessary and will even install a new fuse. This service is free of charge.
The company is also set to send out owner notification letters starting on September 29, 2023.
Vehicle owners can also contact Kia’s customer service at (800) 333-4542. They can use the code SC276 for this recall.
