Tesla has announced it is recalling over two million units of its vehicles in the US. It’s a monumental move as it affects almost every Tesla vehicle in the country. The company also extended the recall to cover around 193,000 Tesla cars in Canada.
Tesla says the recall only impacts vehicles from the two countries.
The company revealed it is recalling the following:
- Model 3 with model years from 2017 to 2023
- Model S with model years from 2012 to 2023
- Model X with model years from 2016 to 2023
- Model Y with model years from 2020 to 2023
What is the Problem?
The recall is due to issues with Tesla’s Autosteer feature. The US Dept. of Transportation was the first to issue a recall. It did so on Dec. 12 because of concerns with Tesla’s Autopilot system. The department said Autosteer could increase the risk of a collision. It can happen when the driver doesn’t notice when the Autosteer feature isn’t engaged.
Concerns about Autosteer came to light due to an NHTSA investigation. The organization was looking into complaints filed by Tesla owners. They complained of losing complete steering control. There were also complaints of power steering loss.
What Can Consumers Do?
Tesla is set to release an over-the-air software update. Tesla owners will receive the update free of charge.
The update could introduce visual alerts and other extra features. These will help drivers become more vigilant while using Autosteer.
The company is also set to send out owner notification letters by February 10, 2023.
Tesla owners can also call the company’s customer service at (877) 798-3752. They can use the code SB-23-00-008 for this recall.
