Product recalls in the US are at their highest in four years. The data was from a report by Sedgwick Brand Protection.
The company revealed that product recalls from the first quarter were the highest. This is in comparison to the last four years. Recalls in five critical industries increased by 14.2% from the last quarter of 2022.
The recall provider noted that scrutiny coming from consumers and regulators will increase. More recalls could become reported. 2023 could end up as the third consecutive year wherein the US had to deal with more than a billion recalled units.

The automotive industry has been reeling from many recalls. These are up by 3.4%. Electrical systems are the main cause of recalls. Equipment and airbag recalls are also common.
The consumer product sector also had an astounding number of recalls in one quarter. It’s up by 442.1. This is the most recalls since 2015.
FDA recalls are also rising. It’s now up by 23.2% from the last quarter. Meanwhile, the USDA recalls are holding steady for two successive quarters now.
Recalls of medical devices account for the largest number of recalls. Most of these were due to manufacturing defects.

The FDA is also set to issue another guidance on various issues. Many new policies will revolve around the Food Safety Modernization Act.
