Yoto is recalling around 270,000 of its Mini speakers due to safety concerns. The Edtech company sold these speakers in the United States and Canada.
The New York-based company said the speaker’s lithium-ion battery can overheat and ignite. This is a potential burn and fire hazard.
There have been six reports of overheating or melting from U.S. consumers. One consumer in the UK also made the same complaint. The company hasn’t received any reports of injuries though.
The Yoto Mini is a portable, screen-free speaker. It’s designed for children aged three to twelve. The device works using Yoto cards. It is capable of playing audiobooks, music, radio, and podcasts.
These children’s speakers come in pale gray. It has orange tactile controls and a pixel display. Consumers can find the model name Yoto Mini and serial numbers on the product’s base.
The recalled Yoto Mini came with a charging cable. But it doesn’t have an adaptor or charger.
The recalled speakers were all manufactured in China. They were then sold online at us.yotoplay.com. The speakers were also available at Amazon.com, Target.com, and maisonette.com.
They were also sold in toy and gift stores from November 2021 through April 2024.
What Consumers Should Do
Yoto is urging consumers to stop using the recalled speakers. They should keep the product out of a child’s reach. Owners should contact the company to receive a free replacement smart charging cable.
Speaker owners must submit a photograph of the old cable cut through the middle. It’s needed before they can receive a replacement cord.
Consumers can also call the company at (844) 370-0426. They can call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday. They can also send an email to minihelp@yotoplay.com.
