Ford Motor Company has announced a massive recall of its SUVs. This latest recall affects 499,129 Edge and Lincoln MKX SUVs sold in the United States. It involves models from 2015 through 2018. These are units built between June 25, 2014, and December 21, 2017.
The company says an issue with the rear brake jounce hoses could cause them to rupture. This could lead to brake fluid leaks. When this happens, the brake pedal travel increases and could cause a crash.
Investigation into Brake Failures
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) began looking into the issue in October 2024. 36 reports of brake hose failures from Edge owners reportedly prompted the investigation. There were similar issues in the past with the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. These vehicles share the same CD4 platform with the recalled Edge and MKX.
Suspected Cause and Remedy
Ford believes the issue stems from low material strength in the hoses. The company changed the hose material. It moved from polyvinyl alcohol to polyethylene terephthalate in 2017. Ford saw that the number of repairs had gone down since then.
The company says it will put in stronger hoses. This is not the final fix, though. Ford is still looking for a solution to the issue.
What Owners Should Do
Ford says owners of affected vehicles should be on alert. They should watch out for signs of brake performance issues. The company advises them to be careful until repairs are available.
Ford has already notified dealers about the issue as well. The company has also sent out interim letters on September 15, 2025. Ford will send out official remedy notifications in April 2026.
