The Ford Motor Company has issued a voluntary safety recall of various models. The company says around 850,318 vehicles have defective low-pressure fuel pumps. The issue could result in the engine stalling while the vehicle is in motion. It’s a safety risk, especially in cases when the vehicle is low on fuel.
What are the Affected Models?
Ford’s latest recall covers several models across the company’s lineup. The recall impacts several Lincoln models as well. The issue affects the following models:
- 2021 – 2023 Ford Bronco
- 2021 – 2023 Ford Explorer
- 2021 – 2022 Ford F-150
- 2021 – 2022 Ford Mustang
- 2021 – 2023 Ford Super Duty Trucks
- 2021 – 2023 Lincoln Aviator
- 2021 – 2022 Lincoln Navigator
The automobile manufacturer estimates the defect affects only 10% of the recalled models.
What Caused the Problem?
One report noted that the fuel pump issue appears to be twofold.
The first problem is jet pump contamination. This could restrict fuel flow and pressure in low-fuel situations. It effectively starves the engine of necessary fuel.
The recalled units could have reduced internal clearances. Ford noted that some fuel pumps showed reduced internal tolerances. This could lead to increased friction. Affected models could become more susceptible to vapor lock, especially in warmer environments.
When either of the two conditions occurs, the engine might receive inadequate fuel. The result is rough idling, misfiring, or a complete engine stall. Affected vehicles might display a check engine light before stalling.
What Can Consumers Do?
Ford doesn’t have a solution to the issue yet, but it’s working on a permanent remedy.
The company has sent out owner notification letters on July 14, 2025. Ford will send out follow-up letters once a verified repair solution becomes available.Ford is also encouraging owners to double-check if the recall affects their vehicles. They can visit the www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
