The Toyota Motor Corporation has issued a safety recall of the Tundra and Tundra Hybrids. The company is recalling the 2022 and 2023 models of this pickup line. The recall will reportedly affect 130,266 units.
Toyota is looking for specific vehicles with a genuine tonneau accessory cover.
What’s the Issue?
The tonneau covers in question can fold into three sections and goes over the truck bed. These covers were also sold by Toyota. They were then installed by distributors or dealers. Tundra owners can also buy the covers as an aftermarket accessory.
Toyota has concerns that the joints of the cover attachment could become loose. This design issue could result in the cover detaching from the pickup truck. A tonneau cover detaching while the vehicle is in motion is a road hazard. It also increases the likelihood of a crash.
The company reported six incidents wherein the tonneau covers detached from the trucks.
What’s the Solution?
Toyota doesn’t have a resolution for this issue yet. The company is advising owners to go to their nearest dealer and have the covers removed. This will be free of charge until they develop a fix. The company announced any remedy they come up with will also be free.
Toyota is also set to send out notification letters to owners. These will give owners instructions to remove the tonneau bed covers. The letters are set to become mailed no later than March 31, 2023. The company will send another once there’s a solution.
