Volkswagen has recalled its all-electric ID.4 SUVs due to a potential issue with its doors. Problems with the handles could cause water to enter the circuit board assembly. This can cause the doors to unlatch.
This is the second recall Volkswagen issued for the ID.4 this month. The company has already recalled certain 2023 – 2024 ID.4 units. These were due to loose fasteners that secure the front airbag inflation mechanism.
The two recalls impact around 100,000 of the 2021 – 2024 models sold in the U.S. This includes those still on dealer lots.
What’s the Problem?
Volkswagen first became aware of door-related complaints in February. The company conducted inspections and decided on the recall.
Reports say there was a problem during the manufacturing of the door handle. The defect allowed water to seep into the printed circuit board. This affected the communication between the handle and the control unit. The doors of the ID.4 could unlock.
The second recall covers over 800 ID.4 SUVs. The nuts holding the primary inflator of the passenger airbag might loosen. The airbags won’t inflate. This increases the risk of injury.
What Can Consumers Do?
Volkswagen is advising ID.4 owners to head to the nearest dealerships. Dealers will inspect the door handles. They will also replace them free of charge if necessary.
The company is set to send out recall notification letters by November 1, 2024.
ID.4 owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 for more information. They can use the recall number 57J9 for reference.
