Publix Super Markets has recalled Greenwise Baby Food pouches. The products reportedly had elevated lead levels.
Publix sold the recalled baby food pouches in over 1,400 stores in its operating area. The supermarket chain operates in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Kentucky. They also operated in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
What are the Affected Products?
Publix is recalling the Pear, Kiwi, Spinach & Pea Baby Food pouches. They’re made by the French firm Bowman Andros. The manufacturer operates a production facility in Mount Jackson, Virginia.
The recall began on May 9 but was only added to the FDA’s official recall list on May 23.
A routine sampling by North Carolina’s agriculture officials revealed the issue. The test revealed that the product had lead levels of 13.4 parts per billion (ppb). This went beyond the acceptable limit of 10 ppb for baby food.
Lead exposure is a serious health risk, especially in babies and young children. The CDC says there aren’t any acceptable or safe levels of lead exposure for children. Exposure to the mineral can affect brain development and cause neurological damage.
The Publix recall is the second baby food recall in eight weeks caused by high lead levels. Target made a similar decision in March. It recalled more than 25,000 packages of vegetable puree.
What Consumers Can Do
Publix has already removed all Greenwise products from its store shelves. The company hasn’t received any reports of illnesses or adverse reactions.
Consumers who bought Greenwise food pouches should return them. They’ll receive a full refund if they do.
