Ford has announced a voluntary recall of its Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles. The recall affects over 694,000 units of said models.
The company said there might be a defect in these vehicles’ fuel injector. The defect could cause the injector to crack and leak fuel. The vehicles could become a fire hazard if this happens.
Ford’s latest recall targets specific models equipped with 1.5L engines. This covers Bronco Sport vehicles from the 2021-2024 model years. It also affects Escape vehicles from the 2020-2022 model years.
Understanding the Issue
A cracked fuel injector could result in fuel leakage within the engine compartment. The leaking fuel could come into contact with a hot engine or exhaust components. It could ignite and raise the risk of an underhood fire.
Ford said there are eight documented cases of vehicles catching fire due to this issue. Six of those vehicles lacked the updated engine control software. There are no reported injuries related to the fires.
Ford began investigating the fuel injector issue in 2022. The automobile manufacturer’s review committee approved recalls in 2022, 2024, and 2025. The company rolled out software updates during those times.
Ford noted that corrosion was a factor in the fuel injector cracks. It decided to issue the new recall this month to make way for new engine control software updates.
What Consumers Can Do
Ford is still working on a resolution to this issue. The company is advising vehicle owners to get the interim software update. This will reduce the risk of underhood fire.
The company is set to send notification letters on August 18, 2025. They will send out a second letter once a permanent remedy is available.
