BMW has issued a national recall of its iX xDrive50s and iX M60s vehicles. The recall covers vehicles with model years 2022 – 2024. The company expects 11,180 units to become affected by the recall.
An NHTSA report stated drivers could hit the cruise control system by accident. This could reactivate the system. It could happen while they’re turning the steering wheel at low speeds. This can cause the vehicle to do an unexpected acceleration or deceleration. The sudden change in speed can be dangerous. It increases the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a crash.
The cruise control icon will become visible though. This can help the driver to deactivate the system. They can do this by either braking or pressing the on/off button of the cruise control system.
This isn’t the first time that BMW has issued a recall. It did one earlier this year. The company recalled over 14,000 electric vehicles. About 5,000 iX SUVs were then recalled due to the battery short-circuiting. Several dozen iX EVs with a 2022 model year were also recalled for battery problems. The manufacturer said debris could enter the battery.
BMW issued Stop Drive orders in both recalls. They advised vehicle owners to do this until the problem’s resolved.
What Can Consumers Do?
BMW is advising vehicle owners to head to an authorized dealer. They will update the cruise control system’s software. This is for free. The company will also send out owner notification letters by July 28, 2023. Vehicle owners can also call BMW’s customer service number at (800) 525-7417.
