The Ford Motor Company has issued a voluntary recall of its F-150 pickup trucks with a 2021 model year. The company says there’s an issue with the windshield wipers. It expects 222,454 units to become affected.
What’s the Problem?
The company reports stated that the arms of the windshield wiper could break. This can cause wiper failure. Malfunctioning windshield wipers can reduce visibility. This is dangerous in certain conditions, like rain and snow. It could result in an accident. Ford has earlier recalled more than a million F-Series trucks for a similar problem. It also pulled in its Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs.
The problem is reportedly due to a batch of faulty wiper motors. Drivers will notice the wipers becoming erratic. Some might slow down. Ford admitted that even vehicles with smart wipers are also affected. These were not included in the initial recall. But the company later discovered the smart wipers will fail at some point too.
Ford admits there have been around 576 reports of detached or inoperative wiper arms. The NHTSA has also received nine complaints about the issue. There have been no crashes or injuries related to the issue so far.
What Should Consumers Do?
Ford is advising F-150 owners to head to their nearest dealer. The dealer will inspect the wiper arms. If needed, they will replace them free of charge. Owners who have paid to have their wipers fixed will become reimbursed by the company. But they must submit the necessary information by September 13, 2023.
The company is set to send out notification letters. They’re already mailed out as of March 27, 2023. Vehicle owners can also contact Ford’s customer service at (866) 436-7332. The number for this particular recall is 23S10.
