Kia is recalling about 200,000 units of K5 sedans. These midsized vehicles were reportedly sold from 2021 to 2023. The recall is due to airbags that were not installed in the proper way. This could lead to the airbags not deploying during a crash.
A filing with the NHTSA was more specific. It revealed that Kia expects the recall to cover at least 188,912 K5 sedans. These models were also known as the Kia Optima. It’s been in production since 2000.
What’s the Issue?
The problem was reportedly discovered by an engineer. This engineer from the North America Safety Office was checking the steering assist. They were investigating a 2021 K5 involved in a crash. The company announced it has not received any reports of injuries or fatalities.
It was later determined there were issues with the side curtain airbag installation. They weren’t installed the correct way. The oversight happened during the assembly at Kia’s Georgia plant. The improper installation could mean the airbags won’t deploy. This could result in injuries.
The side airbags are always designed to protect a driver from injuries in a driver-side crash.
What Should Owners Do?
Kia is set to mail out owner notifications by April 7. The letters will contain instructions to bring the K5 sedans to the nearest Kia dealer.
The dealer will inspect the side airbags of the affected models. Units with incorrect fittings will have their airbags reinstalled. The reinstallation is free of charge. The company will also reimburse owners for any expenses due to the defect.
Owners can also call Kia’s customer service at (800) 333-4542. The number for this particular recall is SC263.Owners who are unsure if their Kia sedan is also affected by the recall can check the NHTSA’s website. They can plug their car’s VIN into the recall search tool to check.
