Mercedes-Benz is recalling around 26,000 units of its G550 and AMG G63 SUVs. The company says potential damage to the wiring harness can lead to the loss of its anti-lock brakes (ABS). The electronic stability control (ESC) will also become compromised.
The affected SUVs are from the model years 2019 to 2021.
The company has filed documents about the issue with the NHTSA. There have been no reports of accidents caused by or related to the issue.
What’s Happening?
The front axle wiring harness could make contact with an auxiliary oil cooler. This could chafe and damage the wiring. The wear and tear could result in the vehicle losing its anti-lock braking system. It could also lead to problems with the loss of its ABS and ESC. Losing one of these systems increases the odds of the vehicle crashing.
The problem was reportedly discovered by Mercedes technicians. They took note of the issue after some owners brought their vehicles in. They noticed the BS and ESP indicator lamps appearing in the instrument cluster.
What Should You Do?
Mercedes is encouraging owners to bring their vehicles to the nearest authorized dealer. While there are no reported accidents, the company can’t discount that it might become a problem. It’s why they’re looking for a solution.
For now, dealers will check the harness. They will also replace any parts showing wear and tear. They’ll also add a protective sleeve on the harness. This will prevent the two parts from coming into contact. The repair and checkup are free of charge.
Mercedes will send out owner notification letters by April 18.
