Nissan USA is recalling its Rogue SUVs with model years 2014 to 2020. The company is also recalling its Rogue Sports from 2017 to 2022. The recall was reportedly prompted by issues with its ignition key.
What’s the Issue?
The vehicle in question has a jackknife-style key. This is the type of key wherein the metal blade flips out from inside a plastid key fob. Nissan stated the key could collapse back into a folded position. A joint within the key could reportedly weaken with use. This can cause the key to fold even while the SUV is in motion.
The driver coming in contact with the key while in the collapsed position could shut off the car. This increases the likelihood of a car accident. A spokesperson from the company said there have been no reports of any injuries or deaths.
The recall is only for the base Rogue S models and the Rogue Sports S models.
What are the Steps Owners Can Take?
Nissan advises all Rogue and Rogue Sports owners not to attach anything to their keys. It’s also best practice to use the key in the unfolded position. This is only until a solution becomes available.
The car company is set to mail out notifications to owners about the safety risk. These are then expected to become sent out by March 17, 2023. Owners will again become notified once there’s a resolution.
Owners can then head to the closest Nissan dealers once they’re advised of a remedy. The dealer will then insert a spacer inside the jackknife key slot. This service will be free of charge.Owners can also get in touch with the company’s customer service at (800) 867-7669. The number for the Rogue recall is R22C5.
