Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of over 46,000 Cybertrucks. Safety regulators revealed that a stainless steel exterior trim panel could detach. It’s a road hazard for other drivers. It also increases the risk of a crash.
The recall covers all Cybertrucks from the 2024 and 2025 model years. The vehicles’ manufacturing dates run from November 13, 2023, to February 27, 2025.
This is the eighth time Elon Musk’s flagship company recalled the Cybertruck. They were also recalled due to accelerator pedal malfunctions and windshield wiper failures. Tesla also recalled the Cybertrucks because of a problem with their electric inverter.
Breaking Down the Problem
The NHTSA and Tesla issued a warning about the exterior trim panel. The panel, or cantrail, is along the left and right sides of the windscreen. It could detach while the vehicle is moving.
The problem is reportedly caused by improper adhesive used during manufacturing. The adhesive can fail under certain environmental conditions. Safety regulators say it’s especially vulnerable in lower temperatures.
Tesla received 151 warranty claims related to this defect. There are no reports of any accidents or injuries caused by the issue.
What Consumers Can Do
Tesla announced it will replace the defective cantrail. The new panel will use a different adhesive that won’t become brittle due to the environment. The company will also use a more secure attachment method. It will add extra reinforcements to the panel.
The company is set to send out owner notification letters by May 19, 2025.
Tesla owners can contact the company’s customer service at 1-877-798-3752. They can also check out the NHTSA website for more details on the recall process.
