Academy Sports + Outdoors recalled over 6,000 units of Redfield Gun Fireproof Safes. The company revealed a defect in gun safes’ locking mechanisms.
The sporting goods company says the internal mechanical locking plates don’t align. This makes it easier for unauthorized individuals to open the safes. It’s a safety risk that can increase the risk of serious injury or death.
The company says they haven’t received any reports of injuries or accidents caused by the issue.
What are the Affected Products?
The Academy Sports + Outdoors recall involves two models. These are the 12-gun and 18-gun models of the Redfield fireproof gun safes. The safes are usually used to store firearms and other valuables. They’re made of dark gray steel.
The recalled 12-gun safes have the model number 179498. The recalled 18-gun safes carry the model number 179499.
Consumers can find the “Redfield” on the number pad on the door. The serial number and model name are also printed on a red label. It’s located in the bottom right corner of the gun-safe door.
The safes were available at Academy Sports + Outdoors’ physical and online stores. The company sold them from February to August 2024. They cost somewhere between $350 to $600.
