Daimler Vans USA (DVUSA) has issued a voluntary recall of several van models. The company is recalling Mercedes-Benz Metris and Sprinter vans. Both are from the model years 2021 – 2022. The 2021 Freightliner Sprinter vans are also covered by the recall.
The company reported an issue with the fuel pump. It could shut down and cause a loss of drive power. This could increase the chances of a crash happening. DVUSA says the issue could affect as many as 20,500 vehicles.
Why are the Vehicles Recalled?
Mercedes-Benz became concerned with the rise of reports involving fuel pump shutdowns. The company looked into the incidents in June 2022. They concluded that the mechanical resistance caused the fuel pumps to fail.
The problem reportedly happens when the fuel pump impeller touches the delivery module. It results in a propulsion loss.
Hyundam Industries of South Korea supplied the fuel pump for the recalled vehicles. The supplier took the blame for half of the problem. They said they noted an irregularity in the raw material used by a secondary supplier.
Hyundam and the secondary supplier changed the production process for fuel delivery. But the company didn’t inform Mercedes-Benz about it.
What Can Consumers Do?
Daimler Vans is advising vehicle owners to head to the nearest licensed dealership. The dealer will replace the fuel pump for free.
The company is set to send out owner notification letters by July 28.
Vehicle owners can also call the company’s customer service at (877) 762-8267. The code number for this DVUSA recall is 4790205.
