Essential Medical Supply has again recalled its Endurance Hand Bed Rails. Around 272,000 of the bed rails are being ordered back following safety concerns.
The Florida-based company said users are at risk of becoming trapped within the bed rail. They could also become trapped between the rail and the side of the mattress. These situations can lead to asphyxiation and pose a risk of death.
Essential Medical Supply made the initial recall in December 2021. The tragic death of an 86-year-old man in California prompted the move. The incident reportedly involved the Endurance Hand Bed Rail (model P1410).
There have been two more reported entrapment deaths. One happened in December 2022. It involved an 86-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Connecticut. The second occurred in August 2023. A 99-year-old man in California was the fatality.
This recall encompasses the Hand Bed Rail (model P1410) and the Hand Bed Rail with Pouch (model P1410-P). The company has also recalled the Hand Bed Rail with Floor Support (model P1411). The Hand Bed Rail with Floor Support with Pouch (model P1411-P) is also included.
The rails are all made from chrome or white metal tubing. They have black padding on the grip handle and under-bed frame. The rails measure about 17 to 21 inches high by 20 inches wide.
