General Motors is recalling more than 40,000 Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty trucks. This, was after GM discovered a potential leak in brake fluid that could result in a fire.
According to reports, those affected by the recall are 40,428 vehicles. These include 4500HD, 6600HD, and 6500HD models. These trucks come with model years between 2019 and 2023.
The vehicles have brake pressure sensor assemblies. This allows brake fluid to leak, thus causing a short circuit. Thus, increasing the risk of a fire that could happen when the vehicle is driving or parked.
General Motors was able to trace the issue to a zinc-nickel plating and sealant. The company used these to inhibit corrosion within the pressure sensor assembly. It further said that the sealant can delaminate. This allows fluid to seep past the sensor assembly seal over time.
What Should Consumers Do?
General Motors says it sent an interim notice to the owners around May 29, 2023. It also advises the owners of these trucks to park their vehicles outside. They should be away from structures until the recall repairs are complete.
The company also assured us that once parts are available to fix the problem, a second letter will go out. Then, the dealers will inspect the master cylinder pressure sensor and wiring harness. They will also replace them, all these free of charge.
At present, General Motors recorded 21 incidents of this brake pressure sensor failure. Of the said incidents, 11 resulted in an actual fire. These are either generating smoke or visible flames.
But the automaker says they are not aware of injuries related to the current problem.Owners of the recalled trucks can contact Chevrolet’s customer service line. You can call (800)-424-9153. Make sure you use the recall number N222375270.
