General Motors has issued a recall of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models. The recall affects the 2024 Silverado 2500 and 3500 models. It also impacts the GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500. GM says around 3,9000 vehicles are being recalled.
The company says the vehicles have some issues with steering.
Understanding the Problem
GM reported to the NHTSA that the steering gear shaft could fracture. This could cause it to become disconnected from the steering arm. When this happens, the driver could experience a complete loss of steering control. This increases the risk of a vehicle crash.
The vehicle manufacturer said the steering gear shaft might have a manufacturing defect. It’s what could cause the shaft to fracture.
The company says it hasn’t received any incident reports of accidents or injuries. The problem was reportedly discovered by technicians doing safety inspections. They submitted a safety report at once. GM supplier Nexteer then discovered that there were issues with the heat treatment.
GM has emphasized that not all Silverado and Sierra 2024 models have this problem.
What Can Consumers Do?
General Motors is advising owners to be more careful when using their vehicles. They’re also asking drivers to head to the nearest authorized dealership. The dealer will inspect the steering gear. They will replace it if necessary. This service will always be free of charge.
The company is also set to send out owner notification letters by September 18, 2023.
