Kia America has issued a voluntary recall of its Sorento SUVs from the 2011 model year.
The recall is over issues with the engine compartment. It could catch fire while the vehicle is in use. This latest recall will affect close to 80,000 units of the Sorentos.
Understanding the Issue
The recalled Sorento SUVs have a four-cylinder engine called the Theta II. Its engine compartment could catch fire while the SUV is in motion. This poses a major injury risk.
The company reported that it still doesn’t know what’s causing the fires. They have noted that the check engine light turns on before a fire breaks out. The driver might also see smoke or notice a burning smell coming from the engine.
The Sorento recall is the latest in a long string of fire-related recalls. These recalls involve Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Both manufacturers have recalled more than 10 million of their vehicles. The two companies often use the same parts from the same suppliers.
What Can Consumers Do
Kia is advising owners of Sorento SUVs to head to the nearest Kia dealership.
The company has already rolled out a software update. It’s called the “knock sensor detection system (KSDS).” They designed the update to prevent potential engine damage and fires.
The Sorento SUVs haven’t had the KSDS update installed. It’s what dealers will do once owners bring their vehicles in. The dealer will also replace the engine if necessary. This will be for free.
Kia is also set to send out owner notification letters by February 9, 2024.
Vehicle owners can also contact the company’s customer service at (800) 333-4542. They can use the code SC291 for this recall.
