Kia is recalling over 427,000 Telluride SUVs. This is due to a defect that could cause the vehicles to roll away while parked.
Documents published by the NHTSA showed that certain 2020-2024 Tellurides have driveshaft issues. It noted the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft are not always engaged. It can lead to unintended vehicle movement in parked Tellurides. This increases the risk of crashes.
This has prompted Kia America to recall all 2020-2023 model-year Tellurides. The company is also recalling select 2024 model-year vehicles.
Kia hasn’t received any reports of injuries or crashes at the time it made the decision.
The shaft engagement problem is reportedly caused by improper assembly. It affects Telluride SUVs manufactured between January 9, 2019, and October 19, 2023. Kia America estimates around one percent of these models have a defective driveshaft.
What Can Consumers Do
Kia America is already addressing the issue. It announced its dealers will update the affected cars’ electronic parking brake software. They will also replace any damaged intermediate shafts at no cost to owners.
Vehicle owners who have already incurred repair expenses will receive reimbursement.
Kia advises drivers of the Telluride SUVs to use the emergency brake before leaving the car. They should do this in a manual way.
The company is set to mail out owner notification letters on May 15. Dealer notification will start a few days earlier.
Vehicle owners can check if their specific vehicle is among the recalled. They can find more information through the NHTSA site or Kia’s recall lookup platform.
