Tesla has issued a recall of its 2021- 2023 Model S and Model X vehicles. The cabin doors of these models can become unlocked during a crash. This increases the risk of passenger injuries.
The company says the recall will affect over 120,000 units of the models S and X.
Understanding the Issue
Tesla engineers were reportedly doing side-impact tests on the vehicles. According to the company’s report, the cabin door became unlatched after impact. The door in question was on the side that wasn’t struck. An unlocked door in a collision is a safety hazard.
The company explained that the test vehicle was operating without the lockout functionality. Tesla discovered this function wasn’t included in a late 2021 software update. The exclusion was accidental.
Tesla hasn’t received any reports of injuries or warranty claims related to the issue. But the issue also affects Tesla vehicles exported to China. The country’s regulators have already issued a recall.
This is the second recall Tesla has issued in the last two months. The company recalled over two million cars in December. This recall was to fix a system that ensures drivers focus when using the Autopilot function.
What Can Tesla Owners Do
Tesla has already rolled out an over-the-air (OTA) software update. This is free of charge. Owners don’t have to take their vehicles to a dealer though.
The company is set to send out notification letters to owners by February 17, 2024.
Vehicle owners can also contact Tesla customer service at (877) 798-3752. They can use the code SB-23-00-009 for this recall.
